News Briefs : FOX and NBC join the comic craze
In the news; FOX does Gotham with no Batman, while NBC enters the world of magic. The growing trend of American stations and networks of remaking foreign TV shows instead of coming up with new ideas continues;
... Not wanting to be left out of the superhero genre now that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has taken over the airwaves, FOX has decided to get in on the genre action with a Batman-adjacent project titled Gotham that will explore Commissioner James Gordon and the bad guys who made the fake city famous.
.. NBC is also jumping on the Comic Book trend with a Constantine series. Based on the DC comics which was adapted some years ago into a Keanu Reeves starrer.
... A&E has secured the rights to the French supernatural drama Les Revenants (which translates to The Returned). The series is set in a small town where people start coming back from the dead without having aged at all, and with no recollection of actually dying. There's a rumor that Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) is in talks to adapt the project. But Sundance Channel recently acquired the rights to broadcast the original series, which will air in the U.S. beginning October 31.
... Damon Wayans Jr. (Second Generation Wayans) is teaming up with FOX for his next project. Man/Child is about two single dads who move in together and struggle to strike a balance being a responsible adult and living a life of debauchery.
... Spartacus vets Aaron Helbing and Todd Helbing are developing a new series for Starz about an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent who infiltrates a Mexican drug cartel. The project, titled Gringo, was inspired by the nonfiction book "The Shadow Catcher" by Hipolito Acosta.
... Bones creator Hart Hanson, along with The Secret Circle creator Andrew Miller, will adapt Chris Ewan's book series "The Good Thief’s Guide" for ABC. The story follows Charlie Howard, a charming fellow who travels the world while blogging about his adventures. Oh yeah, and he steals stuff for funsies (and sometimes profit). Each season will be set in a new exotic location and focus on one particular heist
CASTING NEWS
... Scott Wolf (Perception) is heading to NBC's midseason drama The Night Shift as a day shift trauma surgeon engaged to Jill Flint's doctor character.
... Laura Benanti (Go On), who can next be seen on NBC's upcoming live Sound of Music special, is dropping by Elementary! She'll play a nanny who quickly becomes the main suspect in her employer's death
... Hey, Game of Thrones book fans, the role of Hizdahr zo Loraq has finally been cast for the upcoming fourth season of the TV show. This means nothing to those of us who are still trying to finish Book 1, but the role has gone to British actor Joel Fry (10,000 BC). Hizdahr plays a role in Daenerys Targaryen's story.
... David Milch's new project, The Money, has scored another big-name actor in Nathan Lane. He'll join Brendan Gleeson in the series about an American media mogul's dynastic family, playing Gordon McCarren, a reporter for the New York Herald who hasn't had a byline in weeks and is desperate for a good story to come along.
... Jack Coleman (remember Heroes?, Castle, Burn Notice), has landed a recurring role on ABC's Scandal. The details of his character, however, are being safely guarded by Shonda Rhimes' minions. But we can tell you that his first appearance will happen sometime in October.
... The casting for Syfy's new pilot Dominion has really gotten under way. Anthony Stewart Head, who played Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has been cast as David Weel, the power-hungry president of the Senate of Vega. Also new to the project are Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones) as Claire Rysen, the closest thing Vega has to a princess; Luke Allen-Gale (Ripper Street), who'll play William Weel, the son of David and the Head of the Church of the Savior; and Shivani Ghai (Bride & Prejudice) as Arika, a lead diplomat sent from Helena, a mysterious and militant matriarchal society. They join the previously announced Christopher Egan and Tom Wisdom.
... Lucy, the socially awkward lady friend of Raj's who dumped him in The Big Bang Theory's May finale, might be experiencing a change of heart with regard to Koothrappali. Actress Kate Micucci will reprise her role in the November 14 episode.
... Warehouse 13 vet Joanne Kelly has booked a major recurring role on CBS's thriller Hostages. She'll play Vanessa, an ambassador and the sister of the first lady.

New drama Gang Related and new comedies Surviving Jack, Us & Them (pictured), and Murder Police are all waiting in the wings for midseason. And I'm sure there are about 15 Gordon Ramsay shows lurking in the shadows as well. M. Night Shyamalan's Wayward Pines mystery miniseries (with a TWEEEST!) will air in 2014 as the first of Fox's planned "event series," the much-hyped return of 24 is actually happening with the 12-episode 24: Live Another Day (date TBD), and Fox's new short-form animation block Animation Domination High-Def is set to premiere Saturday nights in the fall. Oh, one final note: New Girl will get the coveted post-Super Bowl slot this year.

Fox Orders J.J. Abrams' Robo-cops, 3 New Dramas and 4 New Comedy Shows.
DRAMAS
Robots! Headless Horsemen! Tough urban gang members! And Greg Kinnear! That's what next year's new crop of Fox dramas will look like. Not just tough, Kinnear tough! In advance of Fox's Upfronts next Monday, the network has picked up four new dramas. That's twice as many new serious shows as it had last year (The Following, Mob Doctor). Let's run 'em down:
.... "Almost Human" is the highlight (if you ask me) of the bunch and comes from producers J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman (Fringe). Karl Urban stars as a cop in the future who has a new partner: a lifelike android (Michael Ealy)! Well, all cops 35 years have robot partners, not just Karl Urban. This one will be all about feelings, methinks. And blasting perps with laser guns. Also starring are Lily Taylor (Hemlock Grove), Mackenzie Crook (Game of Thrones), and Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights).
.... "Gang Related" could be an interesting take on the cop genre. In it, a gang member infiltrates the San Francisco Police Department and rises all the way up to the Gang Task Force. But it sounds like this gang member starts to have feelings (aww) for his new cop buddies, and battles loyalties between his homies and his other homies. Gang Related stars Ramon Rodriguez (Charlie Angels), RZA (CSI: Wu Tang), Jay Hernandez (Nashville), and Terry O'Quinn (Lost).
.... "Sleepy Hollow" is a supernatural thriller based on the classic tale by Washington Irving. You know, the one about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. In Fox's Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane is resurrected in modern-day times to find the world on the brink of destruction, so he teams up with a cop to save us all. Starring Tom Mison, Also starring: Nicole Beharie (42), and Orlando Jones.
..... "Rake" is an Emmy vehicle for star Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine). Based on an Australian series, Kinnear will gloom it up as Keegan Joye, a brilliant but self-destructive criminal defense lawyer. Sort of like "House" in court, I'm guessing? Mirando Otto and John Ortiz also star.
With those orders out, it's almost certainly bad news for the rest of Fox's drama pilots, which include "Boomerang", "Delirium", and "The List". Joining the four picked today are dramas "Bones", "The Following", and "Glee" which were previously renewed.
COMEDIES
Fox is getting busy today, ordering shows like it's Buy Four Get Four Free Day or something. After previously ordering four dramas, Fox took care of those who like to laugh and ordered a quartet of comedies, according to TV Line, including its fourth new cop-like show of the day. They join the previously revealed "Dads", the live-action multi-camera comedy from Seth MacFarlane starring Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi as dudes who let their dads move in with them. Let's run down the newbies:
.... "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" comes from the Parks and Recreation writing team of Mike Schur and Dan Goor. The ensemble comedy stars Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, and Melissa Fumero as cops in a Brooklyn precinct. At the center of it are Samberg as a slacky cop and Braugher as his uptight boss. This was probably the comedy pilot I was anticipating most; it's got so much already in place. Even the promo photo is funny... look at Crews in the background. How is that not going to be hilarious every week?
.... "Surviving Jack" (formerly I Suck at Girls) stars Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU) and is based on a book by the Sh*t My Dad Says guy. It also still makes no sense to me because this is the logline that hasn't been updated yet for some reason: "a story about a boy becoming a man, and a man becoming a father, in a time before coming of age was something you could Google."
.... "Enlisted" is a military comedy from "Cougar Town"s Kevin Biegel and stars Geoff Stults (The Finder) as one of three brothers working at a Florida Army base. I welcome this new premise! The scary thing about this show is that Parker Young plays one of the brothers, which means he will no longer be playing Ryan Shay in "Suburgatory", most likely.
.... "Us and Them" is based on the UK series Gavin and Stacey that ran from 2007-2010. The US version stars Jason RItter (Parenthood) and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) as the title characters, an opposite-attracts situation that tries to make a long-distance relationship work. Jane Kaczmarek and Kurt Fuller also star.
With those four getting the series nods, that means Fox's other comedy pilots are almost certainly dead. Those included The Gabriels, To My Future Assistant, and Two Wrongs. The four picked up today join "Raising Hope", "New Girl", and "The Mindy Project" as Fox's options for comedy next year.
