Masters of Sex : new time piece drama about human sexuality
Set in the mid-1950s, Masters of Sex focuses on the work of Dr. William Masters, a regionally famous OB/GYN at Washington University in St. Louis who wants to research human sexuality. Masters meets quite a bit of resistance from the higher-ups at the hospital and university, leading to a whole lot of time spent in brothels, but he finds a willing assistant in former lounge singer and single mom Virginia Johnson. The two take on the project in secret, drumming up various personal frustrations along the way.
Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon, Twilight, 30 Rock, and a slew of other things) plays the brilliant and kinda curmudgeonly Masters, and the even lovelier Lizzy Caplan (Party Down, New Girl, True Blood) is the curious and sexually open Johnson. Beau Bridges toplines a recurring cast full of somewhat-recognizable people including Caitlin Fitzgerald, Nicholas D'Agosto, Teddy Sears, and Annaleigh Ashford. The show was created by Michelle Ashford, who previously worked on The Pacific and John Adams. It's based on Thomas Maier's biography of the lead characters, Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson.
The show debuts this Sunday, September 29 at 10pm on Showtime, right after the Season 3 premiere of Homeland, and at just about the same time as the final act of Breaking Bad.
Masters of Sex is mostly unlike the pay-cable, gritty, anti-hero stuff we've all grown accustomed to over the last decade-plus. You might think of making a Mad Men comparison because of the historical period, but Masters of Sex isn't as internal, or as bleak. And although it's from two character (Male and Female) points of view like many other shows we've seen recently (The Killing, The Americans, The Bridge, Broadchurch), there's no murder investigation. Masters of Sex won't feel unfamiliar to you, but it's not your typical cable drama.
The show isn't quite as interested in the meticulous period details that drive Mad Men, but it makes great use of the time period as far as cultural perceptions of sex and sexuality go. This is a premium-cable series about sex and sex research, so sure, there's a whole lot of nudity and plenty of amusing asides about the general prudishness of the time, but it never feels like those things are used egregiously. Because of their roles as researchers, Masters and Johnson often talk while other people are having sex, which is a fun spin on sexposition. But in general, Masters of Sex plays everything straight, from Masters' professional challenges to Johnson's personal ones, and to great effect.
It helps that the two leads are fantastic. Michael Sheen could've easily turned in an over-the-top, showy performance, but it's so much better to see him really dig into Masters' psyche to create a character that's taking on this big research project at least partially because he's as personally frustrated with sex as he is professionally confused. Lizzy Caplan more than holds her own as Virginia Johnson, a woman who has desires and dreams and who isn't really afraid to do whatever to achieve them. Together, she and Sheen have the type of great unresolved sexual tension that makes audiences go nuts.
Although the supporting cast is pretty strong, once the show starts following various characters outside of the study, it's simply not as compelling. Upcoming episodes suggest some lame stuff with Masters' family history, but the larger world is still solid. Other than that? Not a whole lot. I mean, unless you don't like watching people have simulated sex, or dildos with cameras on them. If that's the case, maybe this show isn't for you.
Masters of Sex is, without question, the best new series of the fall; it's not even close (sorry, Marvel fans). The show is smart, straightforward, well-acted, and very well-produced. And perhaps best of all, at least at this early stage, it has the confidence to just tell the stories it wants to tell, without piling on some of the more familiar ( tired) cable drama tropes.

News Briefs: Game of Thrones Is the Most Pirated Show of the Season
... Congratulations, Game of Thrones! A lot of people are so addicted to you that they are willing to break the law to watch every one of your episodes. The HBO fantasy series was the most pirated show of the spring by a wide margin, averaging approximately 5.2 million illegal downloads per episode. That's almost the same number of people who watch the show legally—an estimated 5.5 million viewers. Rounding out the top 10 pirated shows of the season are The Big Bang Theory (2.9 million), How I Met Your Mother (2.85 million), The Walking Dead (2.7 million), Hannibal (2.1 million), Vikings (1.9 million), Arrow (1.85 million), The Vampire Diaries (1.8 million), Modern Family (1.75 million), and Revenge (1.7 million).
BUSINESS TIME
.... Under The Dome, CBS new summer show debuted to very impressive numbers, earning 3.2 ratings with 13 - 14 million viewers. Impressive numbers, ratings-wise and viewership-wise for a new summer show, they don't normally perform well outside of the Main TV season.
... Apparently AMC's Mad Men had an up-and-down season creatively, but when it comes to ratings, it was pretty much the same old, same old. Last night's Season 6 finale pulled in an audience of 2.7 million viewers, about the same as last season's (give or take a hundred thousand people), but it was just big enough for AMC to tout it as the highest-rated Mad Men finale ever.
... Lifetime debuted Devious Maids, a.k.a. Los Housewives Desperados, this past weekend and it did rather pedestrian in the ratings. Just 2 million people tuned in to watch the latest from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry. Lifetime's top shows hover around the 3 million mark.
.... Stars has ordered "Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Ronald D. Moore's Outlander, based on Diana Gabaldon's bestselling books. The Outlander series follows Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is swept back to 1743, forced to marry Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser and finds herself torn between two times. The show's 16 episodes will begin filming in Scotland this fall and premiere next year.
CASTING NEWS
... Expect a very cranky American person to arrive at Downton Abbey. Legitimately great actor Paul Giamatti will drop by the fourth season of the PBS import as Harold Levinson, brother of Cora and uncle to Mary and Edith. His character is described as a maverick playboy, and will appear in the Season 4 finale next year.
... Hunky twins Charlie and Max Carver have been cast in the HBO pilot The Leftovers, the Rapture-themed drama from Lost's Damon Lindelof. The facsimiles, best known for playing the Scavo twins on Desperate Housewives, will play—you guessed it—twins who befriend the main character's daughter.
... Boardwalk Empire's Julianne Nicholson has landed the lead role on Sundance Channel's original drama The Descendants. A straight-to-series order for six episodes, The Descendants follows a sheriff who's struggling to prevent a small town and a Native American tribe from tearing each other apart. Nicholson, whose other credits include Law & Order: Criminal Intent and She will play the sheriff's boozing wife.
SAD NEWS
... Gary David Goldberg, the creator of Family Ties and Spin City, passed away on Sunday at the age of 68. The multiple-Emmy winner helped launch the careers of Michael J. Fox and Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence (Lawrence co-created Spin City with Goldberg). Goldberg's other credits in varying capacities included The Bob Newhart Show, Alice, Brooklyn Bridge, and The Tony Randall Show.
... Discovery Channel continued to look like a shell of its former self last night with a live broadcast of daredevil tightrope artist Nick Wallenda walking across the Grand Canyon on a two-inch wide high-wire with no harness and only Jesus to guide him along. And lots of people tuned in to watch him fall to his death (he made it safely to the other side)! The broadcast averaged 8.5 million viewers, but at its peak, 13 million viewers took a peak at the program, crushing everything on network television.

News Brief : Major Doctor Who news
Doctor Who cast are making the news this week, while Dan Harmon returns to Community.
.... Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who. After a few years as the eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who. The news was revealed on the network's Doctor Who blog. Smith's final turns as the famed traveler of space and time will happen in the 50th anniversary special that's scheduled for November and in this year's Christmas special, after which the Doctor will be regenerated by some new lucky chap.
"Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew, and fans of the show," Smith said in a statement..... In other Doctor Who related news, former Doctor's companion Karen Gillian, who played Amy Pond (the girl who waited) for 2 and a half seasons with (also outgoing) present Doctor 'Matt Smith' is joining "Marvel's Guardians of The Galaxy". Details are a bit sketchy about her role in the movie, but it appears she would be the lead female villain in the picture, Lee Pace and Michael Rooker are also said to be villains. The bigger nugget is that Benicio Del Toro has signed on for a multi-picture deal with Marvel, in a lead role for James Gunn’s space opera. Is he Thanos? Is he Rocket Raccoon? Hopefully we’ll soon find out. The cast now includes Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Ophelia Lovibond, Lee Pace, and Glenn Close. The film opens August 1st, 2014.
.... Dan Harmon, the creator of Community is back. After creative and production differences between him and the studio last year that made him resign as the show runner, he's back to the show. After the 'up and down' quality of the episodes of season 4, Harmon's return is a welcome return for the show.
... Ben Edlund, Supernatural's most celebrated writer and executive producer, is leaving the CW show to help out his old pal and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke at Revolution. Edlund, who's also written for The Venture Bros., Firefly, Angel, and The Tick, is responsible for some of Supernatural's best and most creative episodes, including "The End," "The French Mistake," and "Wishful Thinking" (the porno-addicted teddy bear? That's Edlund's baby). Supernatural will survive just fine without Edlund, but Revolution should get a huge boost with him as it looks to improve creatively after its dull first season. And it's not just Edlund who will help things out in Season 2. It was previously announced that Farscape and Defiance creator Rockne S. O'Bannon, as well as CSI:NY's Trey Callaway, are also joining Revolution's writing team.
... Revenge will be saying goodbye to Ashley Davenport next season. Actress Ashley Madekwe has not been asked back for Season 3 as her character's story has come to a natural conclusion and none of the writers wanted to awkwardly squeeze her into the show.
... Actress Agnes Bruckner has been cast in the A&E pilot Occult from producer Michael Bay. The series is another one of those "FBI agents taking on supernatural cases" shows, like The X-Files. Bruckner won't play one of the agents; she'll play a woman who gets caught up in some freaky stuff.
... Season 2 of Netflix's House of Cards is adding a pair to its cast. Mad Men's Sam Page and Deadwood's Molly Parker will join the dirty Washington-set political thriller, but details on their roles haven't leaked yet.

IN DEVELOPMENT
With Mad Men and Breaking Bad approaching their end dates, AMC opened up the cupboard and realized, "Uh-oh. We need some new shows." The network has put seven scripted series in development:
Ballistic City – A futuristic drama, Ballistic City is the story of a former cop thrust into the criminal underworld of a city housed in a generational spaceship destined for an unknown world.
King – In the early 1960s, Floridian King Carmichael sells his soul to a corrupt, racist political machine to win a seat in the Senate. Having run as a segregationist, he is then tapped by Lyndon B. Johnson to champion civil rights in the South.
Ashland – Set in 1950 in Ashland, a tiny mining town in Kentucky, the Evans family has just relocated from California and the matriarch, Del, must hide her family's secrets and find a way to support her three children at the height of the Red Scare.
White City – The drama series follows western diplomats and journalists living in Afghanistan.
Untitled Dahvi Waller Project – Set against the New York automobile industry of the 1920s, two brothers struggle to keep their family-run company afloat with a class-hopping Ziegfeld girl and the daughter of an English competitor blurring the line between love and business.
Untitled Tim Lea/Anonymous Content Project – In America's near future, one family is nearly torn apart in the conflict between a repressive government and the emerging movement for a second American Revolution.
The Wall – In 1960s Berlin, an American businessman becomes embroiled in a web of East-West espionage.
AMC is also beefing up its reality slate, putting three unscripted series into development. We may as well look at those while we're here:
Majority Rules – A docu-style, unscripted series that celebrates the American democratic process. At the most grassroots level, whether it's an election for president of the birdwatchers club or a small-town city council, it will take a lighthearted look at democracy at work as the candidates vie for votes, because in America, Majority Rules.
All-Star Celebrity Bowling – (Previously announced, from Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick's production company.) Take a guess!
Cancelled – A social experiment that will attempt to determine just how far people will really go for fame. Over the course of eight weeks, six households will be outfitted with cameras that will give them the chance to compete for ratings that will determine which household has the most-watched reality show.

Mad Men is back!
Season 6 of Mad Man premiered last night with a 2 hour episode.
The darkness that permeated Mad Men's fifth season culminated with the suicide of Lane Pryce, though the firm itself appeared to be flourishing when we caught up with Don, Joan, Roger and the others in the days leading up to New Year's Eve 1968.
Mad Men has long been about the journey of Don Draper/Dick Whitman as he struggles to discover and accept exactly who he is, but as the series has progressed, more and more of his peers have gotten in on the self-discovery action as well.
So lets see how this new season will unfold the drama over the coming episodes.
