CBS Picks Up Six New Series, Including One With Josh Holloway as a Cyber-enhanced Cop
CBS has announced its new series pickups, and the network's competitors aren't going to like 'em. Loaded with starpower, the half-dozen shows joining CBS's lineup comprise another formidable-looking crop of shows that will dominate ratings and interest fans. In just these six shows, the payroll includes Josh Holloway (Lost hunk), Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Will Arnett, Margo Martindale, Toni Collette, Kal Penn, Tony Shalhoub, Jerry O'Connell, Dylan McDermott, and Anna Faris. That's a pretty impressive haul. Will the shows be good? Who knows, but these familiar faces should at least draw audiences to find out. Let's see what we've got to work with...
.... "Intelligence" >>> stars Josh Holloway as a member of US Cyber Command, an elite government agency that catches bad guys, I'm assuming. But it's Holloway's character that's the draw. The guy has a microchip implanted in his brain that allows him to see the entire electromagnetic spectrum! Marg Helgenberger and Meghan Ory also star.
.... "Hostages" >>> follows a talented surgeon (Toni Collette) who gets caught up in a big conspiracy after she's chosen to operate on the president of the United States. Her family gets taken hostage, and she'll have to do everything she can to get them back. Of all the new CBS shows, this one is the most confusing to me. I just can't picture it at all. Is it a medical drama? Does she only perform surgery on the president in the pilot? Is the rest of the series her going after her family? What's the deal here, CBS? Dylan McDermott, Tate Donovan, and Billy Brown also star.
.... "Mom" >>> is a multi-camera comedy from Chuck "Hitmaker" Lorre starring Anna Faris as a single mom and recovering alcoholic who moves to Napa Valley to dry up. I love Faris and think she can handle her own show. Even if it's multi-cam. Allison Janney, Nate Corddry, and Matt Jones (Breaking Bad's Badger!) also star.
... "The Millers" >>> is also a multi-camera comedy, and it comes from Greg Garcia (Raising Hope). The cast is the draw here: Will Arnett plays a recently divorced dad who has to deal with his parents (Margo Martindale, Beau Bridges) having relationship issues of their own. JB Smoove and Mary Elizabeth Ellis round out the cast. This pickup means we may not see much more of Martindale on "The Americans".
.... "The Crazy Ones" >>> is a single-camera comedy On CBS? Yup. It will be the network's first since 2007. This one stars Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar as a father and daughter who work in the same advertising business. James Wolk, Hamish Linklater, and Amanda Setten also star.
.... "We Are Men" >>> is a single-camera comedy. "We Are Men" was previously called The Exes and stars Chris Smith as a young guy who moves into a short-term housing complex and becomes buddies with a bunch of guys, most of whom are going through their second round of bachelorhood after divorces. This one is also loaded with talent, featuring Kal Penn, Tony Shalhoub, and Jerry O'Connell as Smith's new friends.
It's likely that CBS still has a few more decisions to make, but these pickups mean the chances aren't good for several other pilots. Among them are "Super Clyde", "Bad Teacher", "Friends With Better Lives", "Jacked Up", "The McCarthys", Jim Gaffigan's comedy, Matthew Broderick's comedy, Debra Messing's comedy, "Advocates", "Anatomy of Violence", "Backstrom", "Beverly Hills Cop", "NCIS: Red", "The Ordained", "Reckless", "Second Sight", and "Surgeon General".
