News Brief : Charlie's daughter is cast, CBS eyes another summer Sci-fi and Shonda Rhimes takes on crime

... Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia, House) has landed the big role of Charlie's long-lost lesbian daughter in Two and a Half Men. Right now the character is only slated to recur, but if things go well, Tamblyn will be promoted to series regular and make the big bucks.

... CBS Orders Extant, Another Sci-fi Summer Series, for 2014. CBS's summer series Under the Dome is a ratings hit, so of course the network was going to run out and buy more short-season sci-fi series. CBS has won the bidding war for Extant, a sci-fi series about a female astronaut, ordering it straight to series, asking for 13 episodes to air in the summer of 2014. Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, the same house behind Under the Dome, will produce.
Solid details on Extant are hard to come by, but what we do know is that it's about a female astronaut who tries to reconnect with her family after a year in outer space, and whose decisions can alter the course of human history.

... Fox has ordered a pilot for Stuck, a comedy from Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation). The series, which Jones would executive-produce, is about a middle-aged woman stuck in a rut who gets her daughter hired at the bank where she works, and instantly sees her daughter become her boss. Jones, who will be leaving Parks and Recreation in its upcoming sixth season, will not star in Stuck.

... Shonda Rhimes (Executive Producer and Writer of Greys Anatomy and Scandal) has another TV show cooking at ABC. Rhimes is working with Made in Jersey creator Dana Calvo on a new detective series set in Miami. About an unorthodox male detective who is partnered up with a by-the-book female detective and they do some detecting.

... Fox is eying another miniseries, this one called World War III. And it's about World War III.

... Jordana Spiro, who we'll try to remember from The Mob Doctor, has been cast in FX's pilot Tyrant. The much-anticipated Tyrant comes from Homeland's Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff and follows an American family that lives in the Middle East. She'll play the wife of Justin Kirk's character.

... Last Man Standing will welcome a pair of guest stars from the Robertsons of Duck Dynasty. Si and Willie Robertson will drop by the Tim Allen comedy's season premiere on September 20.

... Mindy of The Mindy Project is gonna see firsthand how the D.E.N.N.I.S. system works. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Glenn Howerton will guest-star on the Fox comedy as a mellow attorney who romances Mindy over multiple episodes. He'll first appear in the fourth episode of Season 2.

... Sundance Channel's The Red Road has added Tom Sizemore to its cast. The drama is about a cop who's caught between a small town and a Native American tribe. Sizemore will play a scary drug dealer.

... Veronica Mars' Jason Dohring (Logan!) will make at least a guest appearance on The CW's upcoming sci-fi series The Tomorrow People. In the series about teens with superpowers, Dohring will play an operative who used to work for the bad guys.

... Rachael Harris (The Hangover) has taken over the female lead in Fox's upcoming comedy Surviving Jack. She replaces Alex Kapp Horner as the wife of Christopher Meloni's character, a dad who gets hands-on with raising his son after his wife goes back to school.

... Chuck's Captain Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) will drop by Hart of Dixie next season.
