Suits airs
Tuesday on USA Network at 10:00pm in America (Available in Nigeria early
Wednesday morning)
I've
watched a lot of law shows, can't say I've seen everything or watched all of
them. As far as law shows goes, my best so far was Boston Legal, it was able to mix office shenanigans, politics and
courtroom drama well in an episode, as well as over an entire season. We were
treated to the enigmatic Alan Shore and crazy Denny Crane, as we were shown
around their office, their personal lives and the lives of their co-workers.
Not
wanting to compare Suits to Boston Legal, but they're both law
shows. I expect a law show to have law cases, and not have office politics as
its theme for much of a season.
Suits went from being a procedural show in season 1 to a serialized one in season 2, focus being on the internal office politics between Jessica/Harvey against Daniel Hardman, very little case were decide in the courtroom, most decided in the conference rooms, that i can expect from shows like Scandal, Damages and Shark. Season 2 was all about Jessica/Harvey vs. Hardman, Mike's feelings for Rachel and whether to let her know his secret, the #SaveDonna campaign, Louis as senior partner, his rise and fall.
All things aside, it made for a good season, but coming on the heels of a fantastic season 1, season 2 was a letdown. Mike wasn't able to show his eidetic memory well in the season; Harvey was always pre-occupied with the arrival and dis-trust of Daniel Hardman, Jennifer Pearson didn't have the same commanding presence she had in season 1, made too many first-year errors as a Managing partner, also, the Rachel to Harvard plot-line wasn't interesting, another element that was missing that I feel had a big effect on season 2 was the missing “Harvey – Donna” relationship. The magnetism of season 1 was missing, the Harvey knows what he's doing, Mike's ability to use his eidetic memory during cases to maximum potential.

All
this and more were missing in season 2, although season 3 has started
brilliantly, it's still toeing the line of season 2, office politicking. It's
now Harvey vs. Jennifer in the office, this is a storyline which should have
ended in season 2, letting this extend past season 2 is beyond me. A season long arc case has being introduced, but we are still
given few courtroom cases, although Mike is now given freedom to handle his own
cases, we should remember that Suits is
still and supposed to be a law-show.
Compared
to other USA Network shows, Burn Notice
about a burnt out former spy, we are shown how this spy handles his operations
and his cases, not about the internal office politics in the C.I.A. Graceland about under-cover officers
from different branches of the American law enforcement agencies living
together under one building, we're shown how they do their jobs, and not how
they live and relate to each other in the house.
For
Suits to reach the splendid heights
of season 1, a return to interesting and gripping court cases should be introduced.
Less office politics, less Mike and Rachel's relationship shenanigans, more
Donna, more Harvey going behind Jennifer's back to win cases.
Hoping
season 3 will get back to the heights of season 1.
