News Briefs: Two and a Half Men Is Adding One Whole Woman

NEWS
... CBS's Two and a Half Men will add one woman to its formula next season as it scurries to replace Angus T. Jones' departing "half man." And this is what the writers came up with: Charlie Harper's long-lost just-of-age daughter. The character, said to be in her late teens or early 20s, will join the series as a regular when she shows up at Walden and Alan's house looking for her dad. And through comedic circumstances, she'll end up moving in with them.

... Arnold Schwarzenegger apparently likes to produce television shows. The bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-politician has sold a drama project called Pump to Showtime, detailing the rise of the fitness industry in the '70s and its origin at a gym called Pump. If it gets ordered to series, Schwarzenegger intends to star in it on a recurring basis. [THR]

... Comedy Central has officially canceled Ugly Americans, instead of unofficially canceling it by not airing any episodes since last April and not ordering any new seasons. [The Comic's Comic]

CASTING NEWS
... We're already talking about Game of Thrones Season 4? Three new characters have been confirmed for Season 4, which tells the second half George R.R. Martin's novel A Storm of Swords. Martin told convention-goers at ConQuest that we'll be seeing the Magnar of Thenn, Mace Tyrell, and Oberyn Martell next year. The characters shouldn't be a big surprise to those who've read the book, but then again, they shouldn't be that exciting either, except for maybe Oberyn because he [spoiler]s [spoiler] in an awesome [spoiler].

... Showtime's Homeland already likes what it sees from new character Senator Andrew Lockhart. So much so that it's upped actor Tracy Letts, who portrays Lockhart in the upcoming third season, to series Regular.

ABC also has an adventure reality show called "The Quest" ready to go. Apparently, that might be part of a new initiative to create limited-run series that bridge gaps during other shows' hiatueses to avoid repeats.

ABC Orders 12 Series for 2013/2014 TV Season

ABC Picks Up 12 New Series, Including Joss Whedon's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

ABC's slate of new series includes lots of drinking, some fun nights, a few not-that-super heroes, and female assassins. The network ordered a dozen shows today, adding five new comedies and seven new dramas to its schedule for 2013-2014. You know how this goes by now, let's run through 'em:

..... "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" >>> is the big highlight here; it was pretty much a lock to get picked up. From Joss Whedon, the drama follows the agents of an exclusive law-enforcement agency made popular in comic books and The Avengers movie. Clark Gregg, Ming Na, Brett Dalton, Iain De Caestecker, and Elizabeth Henstridge star, and the general consensus is that this will be a mega-hit if TV can keep up with superhero movies.

..... "Once Upon a Time In Wonderland" >>> is a spinoff of "Once Upon a Time", and might become a limited-run series that would air between seasons of Once Upon a Time. The series would tell the story of Alice in Wonderland from Alice's point of view. Sophie Lowe, Peter Gadiot, and Michael Socha star.

..... "Lucky 7" >>> is a drama about a group of gas station workers who chip in for a lottery jackpot and win. All of them have different reasons for needing for the money, and the series would follow the aftermath of their sudden good fortune as they deal with the changes in their lives. Stephen Louis Grush, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Summer Bishil, Anastasia Phillips, Christine Evangelista, Lorraine Bruce, and Luis Antonio Ramos star.

.... "Betrayal" >>> is a soapy drama that sounds extra lathery. A female photographer has an affair with a fancy lawyer, and then they wind up on opposite ends of a murder trial when her husband tries the case against her new lover. What are the chances of that? Hannah Ware, Stuart Townsend, Chris Johnson, and James Cromwell star.

.... "The Returned" >>> isn't your normal zombie drama. When the dead start coming back to life, they aren't seeking brains—they just want to reconcile with their loved ones! Omar Epps, Devin Kelley, Samaire Armstrong, and Kurtwood Smith star.

.... "Killer Women" >>> is an adaptation of the Argentinian telenovela Mujeres Asesinas. Tricia Helfer stars as the only female member of the Texas Rangers. She'll kick people's asses and look really good doing it. Marc Blucas and Michael Trucco also star.

.... "Mind Games" (formerly Influence) >>> comes from "Awake's Kyle Killen and stars Christian Slater and Steve Zahn as brothers who start a consulting firm that fixes clients' problems through the science of manipulation and motivation. Based on Killen's body of work, I can't help but look forward to this one.

.... 'Mixology" >>> is a high-concept single-camera comedy following singles at a bar over the course of one evening. It's from the writers of The Hangover and is just crazy enough that it might work. Kate Simses, Ginger Gonzaga, and Blake Lee star.

.... "Trophy Wife" >>> is a single-camera comedy starring Malin Akerman as a former party girl who marries an older man (Bradley Whitford) with three kids and a crazy ex-wife. Marcia Gay Harden and Natalie Morales also star.

.... "Back in the Game" >>> is a single-camera comedy starring Psych's Maggie Lawson as a recently divorced mother who moves back in with her dad (James Caan). Despite vowing to stay away from sports after being crushed by them in her youth, she agrees to coach her son's Little League team.

.... "Super Fun Night" >>> is a single-camera comedy about a group of fun-loving ladies who vow to make each Friday night "super fun." Thus, the name. Rebel Wilson, Kelen Coleman, and Kevin Bishop star.

.... "The Goldbergs" >>> comes from Adam F. Goldberg and is loosely based on his life. Set in the 1980s, the single-camera comedy is described as a dysfunctional The Wonder Years. Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jeff Garlin, and George Segal star.

ABC Renewals and Cancellations for 2012/2013 Fall Season

..... ABC Renews Nashville, Scandal, Revenge, OUAT, and Many More, But Cancels Happy Endings

Fashionably late as usual, ABC has finally revealed the fates of many of it shows. And most of the verdicts are pretty much what we expected. "Grey's Anatomy", "Scandal", "Castle", "Suburgatory", "Modern Family", "The Middle", "Once Upon a Time", and "Revenge" have all been renewed. In a minor surprise, "Nashville" and "The Neighbors" have also survived, and will both return for second seasons. And "Last Man Standing" will be back, too.

But there's also bad news. "Happy Endings" won't be returning for Season 4, at least not at ABC. The comedy was a longshot for renewal after struggling in the ratings, despite earning much love from critics. However, Jane, Brad, Dave, Alex, Max, and Penny have a chance at a lifeline from USA Network, which has already expressed interest in saving the show.

Also receiving bad news from ABC today were "Family Tools", "How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life)", "Malibu Country", "Red Widow", and "Body of Proof", which have all been canceled. That's one season and done for the two midseason comedies, the Reba McIntyre sitcom, and the mob wife drama, and a three-season run for "Body of Proof".

CBS Orders 6 New Series for The 2013/2014 Fall TV Season

CBS Picks Up Six New Series, Including One With Josh Holloway as a Cyber-enhanced Cop

CBS has announced its new series pickups, and the network's competitors aren't going to like 'em. Loaded with starpower, the half-dozen shows joining CBS's lineup comprise another formidable-looking crop of shows that will dominate ratings and interest fans. In just these six shows, the payroll includes Josh Holloway (Lost hunk), Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Will Arnett, Margo Martindale, Toni Collette, Kal Penn, Tony Shalhoub, Jerry O'Connell, Dylan McDermott, and Anna Faris. That's a pretty impressive haul. Will the shows be good? Who knows, but these familiar faces should at least draw audiences to find out. Let's see what we've got to work with...

.... "Intelligence" >>> stars Josh Holloway as a member of US Cyber Command, an elite government agency that catches bad guys, I'm assuming. But it's Holloway's character that's the draw. The guy has a microchip implanted in his brain that allows him to see the entire electromagnetic spectrum! Marg Helgenberger and Meghan Ory also star.

.... "Hostages" >>> follows a talented surgeon (Toni Collette) who gets caught up in a big conspiracy after she's chosen to operate on the president of the United States. Her family gets taken hostage, and she'll have to do everything she can to get them back. Of all the new CBS shows, this one is the most confusing to me. I just can't picture it at all. Is it a medical drama? Does she only perform surgery on the president in the pilot? Is the rest of the series her going after her family? What's the deal here, CBS? Dylan McDermott, Tate Donovan, and Billy Brown also star.

.... "Mom" >>> is a multi-camera comedy from Chuck "Hitmaker" Lorre starring Anna Faris as a single mom and recovering alcoholic who moves to Napa Valley to dry up. I love Faris and think she can handle her own show. Even if it's multi-cam. Allison Janney, Nate Corddry, and Matt Jones (Breaking Bad's Badger!) also star.

... "The Millers" >>> is also a multi-camera comedy, and it comes from Greg Garcia (Raising Hope). The cast is the draw here: Will Arnett plays a recently divorced dad who has to deal with his parents (Margo Martindale, Beau Bridges) having relationship issues of their own. JB Smoove and Mary Elizabeth Ellis round out the cast. This pickup means we may not see much more of Martindale on "The Americans".

.... "The Crazy Ones" >>> is a single-camera comedy On CBS? Yup. It will be the network's first since 2007. This one stars Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar as a father and daughter who work in the same advertising business. James Wolk, Hamish Linklater, and Amanda Setten also star.

.... "We Are Men" >>> is a single-camera comedy. "We Are Men" was previously called The Exes and stars Chris Smith as a young guy who moves into a short-term housing complex and becomes buddies with a bunch of guys, most of whom are going through their second round of bachelorhood after divorces. This one is also loaded with talent, featuring Kal Penn, Tony Shalhoub, and Jerry O'Connell as Smith's new friends.

It's likely that CBS still has a few more decisions to make, but these pickups mean the chances aren't good for several other pilots. Among them are "Super Clyde", "Bad Teacher", "Friends With Better Lives", "Jacked Up", "The McCarthys", Jim Gaffigan's comedy, Matthew Broderick's comedy, Debra Messing's comedy, "Advocates", "Anatomy of Violence", "Backstrom", "Beverly Hills Cop", "NCIS: Red", "The Ordained", "Reckless", "Second Sight", and "Surgeon General".

CW : The CW Orders Four Dramas, Including the Post-apocalyptic "The 100".

The CW is screaming from the crib about four new shows of its own. The CW would continue to steer toward genre shows, but it's also managed to sneak in a history lesson as well. Let's run 'em down:

.... "The 100" ---- is set 97 years after nuclear war turned the earth into a dust bowl, when the remaining human survivors, who live in a spaceship, decide to get the planet ready for habitation by sending 100 juvenile delinquents back to earth to clean it up and make sure there aren't any man-eating mutants running around. The cast includes Eliza Taylor, Henry Ian Cusick, Kelly Hu, Isaiah Washington, and Page Turco.

..... "Star-Crossed" ----- (formerly known as Oxygen) fulfills The CW's yearly quota of hot human women making out with non-human hunky men. Aimee Teegarden stars as a high-school girl who falls in love with the new foreign exchange student. But this guy is from SPACE! He's one of nine aliens integrated into the school after 10 years of living in segregated camps following an alien immigration. Matt Lanter, Malese Jow, and Maggie Elizabeth Jones also star.

.... "The Tomorrow People" ----- is based on the British series of the same name that ran in the '70s. The drama sees several young people with special powers from around the world team up to beat the bad guys. Yes, just like "Heroes". Robbie Amell, Peyton List, and Mark Pellegrino star.

.... "Reign" ---- is the black sheep here, as there isn't an alien or superpowered teen in sight. It's a period piece set in France during the rise of a then-teenage Mary Queen of Scots. I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say this will be the best of the bunch. It stars Adelaide Kane, Tony Regbo, and Torrance Comps.

Next week, we'll find out which of these new shows will nab the prime slots on The CW's fall schedule and which ones will be held until the midseason. They join the previously picked-up "The Originals" on The CW's roster of freshmen for 2013-2014. That means that the network's other pilots, "Blink", "Company Town", and "The Selection" won't be going to series.

NBC Continues its Orders for New Shows

The orders for NBC shows continued today after after previous orders. Coming to NBC next season? A remake of a classic detective show and another one of those comedies about how hard the dating world is for very attractive people. And now it's ordered a "Chicago Fire" spinoff! Let's take a look at them!

.... "Ironside" stars Blair Underwood (pictured above; he played the president on "The Event") as a handsome detective who stays on the job after a shootout leaves him confined to a wheelchair. With his team of other probably handsome detectives, he solves some tough cases. "Ironside" is based on the 1960s series of the same name. Ironside also stars Spencer Grammer (Greek), Brent Sexton (The Killing), and Pablo Schreiber (The Wire).

.... "Undateable" is executive-produced by Scrubs' Bill Lawrence. The multi-camera comedy follows a group of young people who call themselves "The Undateables" but have their lives changed when a confident friend enters their group. Chris D'Elia (Whitney), Brent Morin, and Matthew Wilkas.

..... "Chicago P.D." is like Chicago Fire but with less fire and more cops. It will follow the elite Intelligence Unit of the Chicago Police Department as it takes on the worst of the worst in the Windy City. Also, there will be many hunky hookups. This sounds like a bit of an overeager stretch for NBC, as Chicago Fire did fine but not GREAT for NBC. Jason Beghe, Jon Seda, Scott Eastwood, and Tania Raymonde star.

.... In addition to the three series above, NBC has ordered the new shows "Believe", "Crisis", "About a Boy", "Sean Saves the World", and "The Family Guide".

News : NBC Renews "Community" for Season 5, Cancellations, Renewals, New Series and a Bit of Gossip

CANCELLATIONS
.... NBC has cancelled Mathew Perry's comedy "Go On", Broadway musical drama "Smash" and Ryan Murphy's comedy "The New Normal", with only a decision on "Hannibal" left to be made (and that could take a while, since the show is still in season).
"The New Normal" and "Smash" join "Up All Night", "Whitney", "Guys With Kids", "1600 Penn", and "Deception" as recent additions to NBC's 2012-2013 graveyard.

.... CBS cleaned out its closet today, delivering a swift axe-chop to four shows, including a pair of long-running series. "CSI: NY" is saying goodbye after nine seasons, which means the original flavor is the only remaining iteration of the franchise. "Rules of Engagement" has also been canceled, after seven years of loyal service to the network. Going one-season-and-done are "Golden Boy" and "Vegas". Both series were just kinda there this season, getting middling reviews and ratings.

.... FOX has cancelled "Touch". "Touch", the Kiefer Sutherland starer about a father with a gifted son and how he interacts with the Universe isn't coming back after two seasons.

.... ABC has cancelled the comedy "Happy Endings". The show about 6 friends who remain friends with each other even after the couple amongst them don't go on with their marriage isn't returning for a fourth season.

.... TNT has canceled "Southland" after five seasons, as expected. The show was adored by critics but failed to make an impression with viewers, drawing fewer than two million viewers for its entire fifth season. "Southland" actually started on NBC, which ordered a second season of the show but then changed its mind, allowing TNT to step in and save it. There's early talk about a two-hour "Southland" wrap-up movie, but it's VERY EARLY TALK. As for the series finale that aired last month, it sort- of worked as an actual series finale. In other TNT news, the network also put a pillow over "Monday Mornings". The medical drama starring Ving Rhames never got going.

RENEWALS
.... "Criminal Minds" Overcomes Its Contract Standoff, Officially Gets Renewed for Season 9. The show I'm calling "1,000 reasons not to live in America" is returning for a ninth season after contracts negotiations were ironed out with the female cast members on the show, as they wanted to earn as much/close to what the males were earning.

.... Against the Odds, NBC has gone and done the unexpected and renewed cult fave "Community" for a fifth season, despite dismal ratings and lots of backlash,. The beloved comedy was barely hanging onto the bubble as the Upfronts approached, but its chances continued to improve throughout this week as NBC slowly axed nearly all of its other comedies. The decision comes the day after "Community's Season 4 finale jumped up in ratings, all the way to a 1.3 rating. Yeah, that's not good by any means, but it's a positive sign that NBC was hoping for from one of its veteran comedies. "Community" joins "Parks and Recreation" on NBC's extremely short list of returning comedies.

.... The CW has renewed "Nikita" and "The Carrie Diaries". There's no word on how long "Nikita" and "The Carrie Diaries" episodes next season will be, but rumors are the shows will looking at a 6-episode and 13-episode order for next season.
That means The CW's schedule next season will include "Arrow", "Supernatural", "The Vampire Diaries", "Hart of Dixie", "The Carrie Diaries", "Nikita", and new series "The Originals", "The 100", "The Tomorrow People", "Star-Crossed", and "Reign".

... When "Burn Notice" returns for Season 7 on June 6, it will be the beginning of the end. USA has announced that the spy show will conclude at the end of Season 7. Creator Matt Nix and USA will remain on good terms, however, and Nix will develop a medical drama called "Complications" for the network.

... TBS has ordered the comedy "Ground Floor" from Bill Lawrence, creator of "Scrubs" and "Cougar Town". The show is set in the corporate world and follows a banker who hooks up with a hottie, then finds out she works for the maintenance team in his building.

NBC's upcoming Media Release, New Shows and Cancelled Shows.

NBC has ordered five new series—three new comedies ("About a Boy", "Sean Saves the World", and "Family Guide") and two new dramas (J.J. Abrams' "Believe" and "Crisis"). They join the previously straight-to-series orders for comedy "The Michael J. Fox Show" and pirate drama "Crossbones".

A young girl and a con! International conspiracies! Man-boy bonds! Man-girl bonds! Man-blind-boy bonds! That's what part of NBC's new fall schedule will feature, as some of the network's secrets have hit the internet in advance of its Upfront presentation in New York, which is scheduled for Monday. So far it's three new comedies and two new dramas for the network, with many more announcements soon to come unless NBC wants to broadcast a lot of dead air. Let's run down the new series:

..... "Believe" has J.J. Abrams' name attached to it, like half of all TV shows on the air right now. He'll executive produce along with Bryan Burk for Bad Robot. The drama sounds like a supernatural thriller and follows a young girl with "a gift" who gets protection from a recently sprung con to keep evil forces at bay. The main actress in this show is an unknown young girl named Johnny Sequoyah, Jake McLaughlin, Kyle MacLachlan, Delroy Lindo, Jaime Chung, and Sienna Guillroy also star.

.... "Crisis" comes from Rand Ravich, the creator of NBC's "Life". This one goes all the way to the top! In the drama, a mystery man brings all of Washington to its knees through an international conspiracy that threatens everyone. Sound like "The Event" Part II! "Crisis" marks the triumphant return to television of Gillian Anderson, "The X-Files" Scully. Also starring are Dermot Mulroney (Enlightened), Max Martini (Revenge), and Rachael Taylor (666 Park Avenue).

..... About a Boy is a single-camera comedy adaption of the Nick Hornby novel and the 2002 Hugh Grant film that spawned from it. David Walton (Bent) plays a bachelor who forms a friendship with his neighbor's young boy. And yes, the neighbor happens to be a hot single mom (Minnie Driver). Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) is writing and producing, so you can bet it's going to be all weepy and exhilarating and make you feel feelings you never thought you could. "1600 Penn"s Benjamin Stockham will play the boy (assuming NBC doesn't renew 1600 Penn). Leslie Bibb (Judd Apatow movies) and Al Madrigal (The Daily Show) also star. This show is going to be very easy to like. Update: "1600 Penn" has been cancelled.

.... Sean Saves the World continues Sean Hayes' relationship with NBC. Hayes (Will & Grace) produces and stars as a man dealing with his 14-year-old daughter and his temperamental boss. It's a multi-camera joint. Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!), Echo Kellum (Ben & Kate), and Linda Lavin (Alice) also star.

.... Family Guide is a single-camera sitcom about a boy who worships his blind father and becomes closer to his mom after the two divorce. Parker Posey, JK Simmons, and Eli Baker star, with Bent's DJ Nash behind the series.

These five new shows join "Chicago Fire", "Revolution", "Law & Order: SVU", "Grimm", "Parenthood", "The Voice", and "The Michael J. Fox Show" (new series) on NBC's schedule for 2013-2014. There will be more NBC pickups coming soon, as well as decisions on which of the networks comedies will return.
According to reports online, NBC has passed on the following pilots, taking them out of consideration: Brenda Forever; Drop-Off (previously known as The Gates); Holding Patterns; Joe, Joe, & Jane; Bloodline; Hatfields & McCoys; The Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives; and The Sixth Gun.

RENEWALS

..... NBC has also ordered a sixth season of "Parks and Recreation". With "30 Rock" over and "The Office" ending next week, NBC had little choice but to renew Parks and Recreation, lest the network be without any established returning comedies next season.

CANCELLATIONS

That's two seasons and done for Whitney Cummings' "Whitney", a multi-camera comedy that inexplicably stuck around after being panned by critics and the viewers.

Also moving out of NBC's digs is White House family comedy "1600 Penn", a single-camera sitcom that got off to a rough start in January before eventually picking up a bit. It was too late, though, and the series never really gained any additional viewers.

They also canceled "Guys With Kids" and the Christina Applegate, Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph comedy "Up All Night". Hopefully this is good news for "Go On" and "New Normal".

NBC has not yet made a decision on "Community".

Fox Orders J.J. Abrams' Robo-cops, 3 New Dramas and 4 New Comedy Shows.

DRAMAS

Robots! Headless Horsemen! Tough urban gang members! And Greg Kinnear! That's what next year's new crop of Fox dramas will look like. Not just tough, Kinnear tough! In advance of Fox's Upfronts next Monday, the network has picked up four new dramas. That's twice as many new serious shows as it had last year (The Following, Mob Doctor). Let's run 'em down:

.... "Almost Human" is the highlight (if you ask me) of the bunch and comes from producers J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman (Fringe). Karl Urban stars as a cop in the future who has a new partner: a lifelike android (Michael Ealy)! Well, all cops 35 years have robot partners, not just Karl Urban. This one will be all about feelings, methinks. And blasting perps with laser guns. Also starring are Lily Taylor (Hemlock Grove), Mackenzie Crook (Game of Thrones), and Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights).

.... "Gang Related" could be an interesting take on the cop genre. In it, a gang member infiltrates the San Francisco Police Department and rises all the way up to the Gang Task Force. But it sounds like this gang member starts to have feelings (aww) for his new cop buddies, and battles loyalties between his homies and his other homies. Gang Related stars Ramon Rodriguez (Charlie Angels), RZA (CSI: Wu Tang), Jay Hernandez (Nashville), and Terry O'Quinn (Lost).

.... "Sleepy Hollow" is a supernatural thriller based on the classic tale by Washington Irving. You know, the one about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. In Fox's Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane is resurrected in modern-day times to find the world on the brink of destruction, so he teams up with a cop to save us all. Starring Tom Mison, Also starring: Nicole Beharie (42), and Orlando Jones.

..... "Rake" is an Emmy vehicle for star Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine). Based on an Australian series, Kinnear will gloom it up as Keegan Joye, a brilliant but self-destructive criminal defense lawyer. Sort of like "House" in court, I'm guessing? Mirando Otto and John Ortiz also star.

With those orders out, it's almost certainly bad news for the rest of Fox's drama pilots, which include "Boomerang", "Delirium", and "The List". Joining the four picked today are dramas "Bones", "The Following", and "Glee" which were previously renewed.

COMEDIES

Fox is getting busy today, ordering shows like it's Buy Four Get Four Free Day or something. After previously ordering four dramas, Fox took care of those who like to laugh and ordered a quartet of comedies, according to TV Line, including its fourth new cop-like show of the day. They join the previously revealed "Dads", the live-action multi-camera comedy from Seth MacFarlane starring Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi as dudes who let their dads move in with them. Let's run down the newbies:

.... "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" comes from the Parks and Recreation writing team of Mike Schur and Dan Goor. The ensemble comedy stars Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, and Melissa Fumero as cops in a Brooklyn precinct. At the center of it are Samberg as a slacky cop and Braugher as his uptight boss. This was probably the comedy pilot I was anticipating most; it's got so much already in place. Even the promo photo is funny... look at Crews in the background. How is that not going to be hilarious every week?

.... "Surviving Jack" (formerly I Suck at Girls) stars Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU) and is based on a book by the Sh*t My Dad Says guy. It also still makes no sense to me because this is the logline that hasn't been updated yet for some reason: "a story about a boy becoming a man, and a man becoming a father, in a time before coming of age was something you could Google."

.... "Enlisted" is a military comedy from "Cougar Town"s Kevin Biegel and stars Geoff Stults (The Finder) as one of three brothers working at a Florida Army base. I welcome this new premise! The scary thing about this show is that Parker Young plays one of the brothers, which means he will no longer be playing Ryan Shay in "Suburgatory", most likely.

.... "Us and Them" is based on the UK series Gavin and Stacey that ran from 2007-2010. The US version stars Jason RItter (Parenthood) and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) as the title characters, an opposite-attracts situation that tries to make a long-distance relationship work. Jane Kaczmarek and Kurt Fuller also star.

With those four getting the series nods, that means Fox's other comedy pilots are almost certainly dead. Those included The Gabriels, To My Future Assistant, and Two Wrongs. The four picked up today join "Raising Hope", "New Girl", and "The Mindy Project" as Fox's options for comedy next year.

News Brief : "Castle" renewal, News Series and Casting News

... ABC WILL renew "Castle", eventually. And when it does, it might do it for two seasons. The holdout on the news shouldn't scare fans, as ABC hasn't renewed a darned thing yet. Expect official word no later than next Tuesday, when ABC holds its Upfront in New York. [Deadline Hollywood]

.... CW has renewed "Nikita" and "The Carrie Diaries" for a fourth and second season respectively. How many episode orders for both series aren't known yet, whether "Nikita" will return with full season of 22 - 24 episode orders or 13 episodes order for it to finish the show.
"The Carrie Diaries" should return with its usual order of 13 episodes.

BUSINESS TIME
... TNT has ordered the Howard Gordon (Homeland) produced "Legend" to series. The drama stars Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) as a spy whose specialty is disguise, allowing him to become a different person for each mission he goes on. Yesterday, TNT ordered the thriller "The Last Ship", starring Eric Dane as the captain of a Naval destroyer after nuclear war destroys most of the world.

... Starz is developing a new drama with Piers Morgan called "Fleet Street". The series would be about the rise of tabloid journalism in 1970s London as told through the eyes of an American journalist. Proving networks share a single brain, this is the second drama about the birth of tabloids put in development in the last two weeks. FX is developing James Ellroy's novel "Shakedown", about a private detective turned tabloid reporter in 1950s Los Angeles.

... Showtime's "The Borgias" might not get re-elected for a fourth season. If the current third season is the series' last, then hope is the series would wrap things up with a two-hour movie.

CASTING ROUNDUP
... Colin Ferguson, "Eureka's Jack Carter, is staying at Syfy and will join the cast of "Haven" as it enters its fourth season. Ferguson will play a character named William, a mystery man who crosses path with FBI agent Audrey Parker.

... Richard Madden, who plays Robb Stark in "Game of Thrones", is going from handsome (supposed) king to just handsome prince. Madden has been cast in Disney's upcoming live-action Cinderella film, playing Prince Charming. Lily James (Downton Abbey) will play Cindy, Cate Blanchett will play the wicked stepmother, and Kenneth Branagh is directing.

News : Game Of Thrones Series High, New Shows and Casting News.

... This is your weekly reminder that Game of Thrones has hit a new series high. 5.5 million viewers this time, up from 5.3 million last week.

... Starz has announced a premiere month for its pirate epic "Black Sails": January 2014. The series follows Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and takes place 20 years before the events of Treasure Island. There are a lot of pirate shows coming out over the next year, but if you like your pirates with a side of boobs and gore, this will be the one for you.

... TNT has given a series order to "The Last Ship", a military thriller starring "Grey's Anatomy" vet Eric Dane. The series, based on the William Brinkley novel of the same name, follows the crew of a Navy destroyer that survives a global nucelar catastrophe. The 10-episode season season ships off in 2014.

.... NBC has cancelled "Deception", the Meagan Good starring series. After poor ratings and critical backlash, and subsequent mediocre episodes, this series isn't coming back.

... Awesome U.K. sitcom "The IT Crowd" is coming back for an episode, according to creator Graham Linehan. The plan is to air a final 40-minute special on Channel 4 in the U.K., with cast members Chris O'Dowd, Richard Ayoade, Katherine Parkinson, and Matt Berry all returning. If you haven't seen "The IT Crowd" (which failed as an American import starring Joel McHale), do it!

... NBC is milking this "The Office" sendoff for all it can (and why not?), expanding the May 16 series finale to an hour and 15 minutes. It will preceded by an hour-long Office retrospective and followed by a new episode of "Hannibal", which will run with limited commercial interruptions.

... We spent all of Season 2 wondering when FX's "The Americans" would kill Soviet double spy Nina and FBI secretary Martha, and now we're going to spend all of Season 2 wondering how the show will keep them alive. Actresses Annet Mahendru (Nina) and Alison Wright (Martha) have both been promoted to series regulars for the spy drama's second season.

... There's a standoff happening over at CBS's "Criminal Minds". The drama has not yet been renewed due to salary disagreements between cast members and the studio-and-network combo that's behind the series, ABC Studios and CBS. Final offers have gone out to Thomas Gibson, Joe Mantegna, Shemar Moore, Kirsten Vangsness, and A.J. Cook, but Vangsness and Cook have declined theirs, opting to stand together to bring attention to the fact that the female actors on the show are, in some cases, getting paid less than half of what their male counterparts are making. It's unclear whether the show would move on without Cook and Vangsness.

Various Shows and their Status.

STATUS: RENEWED LIKELY RENEWAL ON THE BUBBLE LIKELY CANCELLATION CANCELED

1600 Penn on NBC ----- On the Bubble
We're thinking this one's a goner, but given NBC's current state of affairs, anything could happen. Though if it does get axed, we won't miss it.

2 Broke Girls on CBS ---- Renewed
Max and Caroline will return, even though the cupcake shop failed.

30 Rock on NBC --- Canceled
Liz Lemon and the TGS gang went out with a satisfying (and touching!) series finale on January 31, 2013. We'll miss her, but honestly, with the state NBC is in, maybe it's better this way.

666 Park Avenue on ABC --- Canceled
The only thing truly scary about this ABC horror show was the way it squandered its potential. Better luck next time, Terry O'Quinn!

90210 on The CW --- Canceled
Honestly, we're surprised this one lived to see Season 5.

Alphas on Syfy --- Canceled
Sadly, we'll never know why Gary was unaffected by Stanton Parish's strobe attack, or what happened to Rachel, Nina, Rosen, and the rest of the DCIS.

This one won't be going anywhere for a long, long time: It's only in Season 2, and it has as a syndication-guaranteeing 100-episode order.

Bachelor Pad on ABC ---- Canceled
There will be no slut-shaming and catfighting this summer, but this could easily come back at any time.

Order up! We love saying that when Bob's Burgers gets renewed! Okay yeah it's getting old, you're right.

Bones on FOX --- Renewed

Boss on Starz --- Canceled
Fired after two seasons.

Brand X With Russell Brand on FX --- Renewed
Not just renewed, but also expanded to an hour-long live show!

This show was canceled. Wait, it was renewed? Really? Oy.

Brickleberry on Comedy Central --- Renewed
Back for Season 2 to keep the good vibes between Daniel Tosh and Comedy Central going.

MTV opted not to move forward with Buckwild's previously announced Season 2 renewal after the tragic accidental death of series star Shain Gandee.

Golden Boy on CBS ------ Likely Cancellation
It's not looking good.

Great, now how am I supposed to talk to my kids about sex?

Grey's Anatomy on ABC ----- Likely Renewal
Another one where "likely renewal" actually means "a sure thing."

Grimm on NBC ----- Renewed
Not only did it get renewed, but it got a temporary promotion to Tuesday nights.

Guys With Kids on NBC ------ On the Bubble

Hannibal on NBC. ----- On the Bubble
NBC sent out drama renewal information, but this wasn't included on the list. It's probably too early for NBC to make a decision, but as one of network TV's best new dramas, it should get a second season.

Happily Divorced on TV LAND ------ Renewed

Happy Endings on ABC ------ On the Bubble
This one really could go either way; while cancellation seemed imminent after ABC kicked the show to Fridays and seemingly planned to burn it off in two-episode chunks, a network-sanctioned "save the show" campaign threw everybody for a loop. Whether that's still possible is anyone's guess, but we're crossing our fingers for some a-mah-zing news.

One of the season's more shocking renewals.

Haven on Syfy. ---- Renewed

Look for Carrie's crazy eyes and listen for crazy jazz riffs in late September when Season 3 debuts.

How to Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) on ABC ---- On the Bubble
Too early to tell one way or another but the way ABC is treating it, it's not looking good.

Hunted on Cinemax. ----- Renewed
This is slightly complicated. BBC didn't want to do anymore seasons, but co-producer Cinemax does and will push out a second season on its own. However, BBC owns the name, so Cinemax will have to change the title of the show. But it will still follow sexy spy Sam Hunter, so that's good.

Immortalized on AMC ------- On the Bubble
AMC renewed Freakshow, which debuted with Immortalized, but it didn't give a thumbs up to Immortalized. It doesn't look good.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on FX ------ Renewed
Season 9 begins this fall, but Paddy's Bar will stay open even longer as FX renewed it for a tenth season and revealed it will move over to the new FX channel, FXX, in 2014. Stock up on Advil.

Key & Peele on Comedy Central ----- Renewed

Who knows. Unrelated question: who would win in a fight, Last Man's Mike Baxter or Home Improvement's Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor?

Last Resort on ABC ----- Canceled
Somewhere in the Atlantic, Captain Marcus Chaplin is awaiting orders from a secondary, official Twitter feed.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on NBC ---- Renewed

Love in the Wild on NBC. ----- Likely Cancellation

Modern Family on ABC ----- Likely Renewal
In the case of this repeat Emmy-winner, "likely" in this case means "it's only a matter of time."

Monday Mornings on TNT ------ Likely Cancellation
We give this medical drama a life expectancy of about two more hours. It had a bad case of poor ratings.

NCIS on CBS ----- Renewed

NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS. ----- Renewed

Nashville on ABC ----- On the Bubble
Though happiness isn't exactly a popular topic in country music, if we get our way, Rayna and Juliette will be singing a happy tune.

Nathan For You on Comedy Central ----- Renewed

Necessary Roughness on USA. ----- Renewed
After almost meeting its maker, Necessary Roughness scored a late renewal, albeit with a shortened 10-episode season that starts June 12.

The sci-fi series about cloning has been granted a second season.

Partners on CBS ------ Canceled

Perception on TNT. ----- Renewed

This comedy starring Anne Heche hasn't even aired yet, but it looks like NBC is just dumping it in the summer. Not likely to be saved.

Underemployed on MTV - Music Television. ------ Likely Cancellation

Unforgettable on CBS. ---- Renewed
This procedural came back from the dead and will relocate to summers.

Up All Night on NBC ----- Likely Cancellation

Veep on HBO ----- Renewed
Currently airing Season 2, and already renewed for Season 3.

Vegas on CBS ----- Likely Cancellation
Its move to Friday nights was not a vote of confidence from CBS.

Vice on HBO ------ On the Bubble
Still in its first season, but it sounds like HBO likes this one.

Vikings on The History Channel ----- Renewed

It's currently in a mid-season break, but this strong performer is probably good to go.

Washington Heights on MTV - Music Television ------ Likely Cancellation

Wedding Band on TBS ----- Canceled

White Collar on USA ------ Renewed

Whitney on NBC ------ On the Bubble

Wilfred on FX ----- Renewed

Wipeout on ABC ---- Renewed

News : Guillermo Del Toro to adapt Monster, News, Renewals, New Shows and Casting News.

... THIS SOUNDS PRETTY COOL NEWS

... Super famous director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) is teaming up with HBO for a possible series based on the Japanese manga Monster, from author Naoki Urasawa. The 18-volume series follows a doctor who tracks down a psychotic teen—and the teen happens to be the child whose life he saved years earlier—to stop him from committing terrible atrocities on the world. So it's a feel-good story, basically.

...BBC America is replicating "Orphan Black" for a second season. The sci-fi series about clones has been renewed, with 10 new episodes due next year. "Orphan Black& is led by the performance of Tatiana Maslany, who plays multiple characters, all clones of one another.

... TNT has upped the episode order for the second season of Major Crimes from 15 episodes to 19 episodes following its wildly successful first season, which averaged 7 million viewers per episode. The network was also feeling generosity toward "Perception", and ordered an extra episode of that, too. Both "Franklin and Bas"h are still waiting by their phones.

... Netflix has slapped a premiere date on "Orange is the New Black", its next original series. The show from "Weeds" creator Jenji Kohan will debut July 11 and release all its episodes at once, as is the Netflix way. "Orange is the New Black" is a dramedy about a woman who gets thrown in jail and must learn to adapt to her new surroundings.

,.. ABC Family has picked up its pilot "Terminales" to series, but on one condition: The show has to change its name! The drama, an adaptation of a Mexican soap, follows a female journalist who balances work and family... and cancer. The new name of the series is "Chasing Life".

... NBC has given "Smash" a tiny lift for its season (and likely series) finale. The two-hour Season 2 ender being moved from the series' normal Saturday time-slot (LOL Saturday) to Sunday, May 26 at 9pm.

... Having already mastered drama, A&E Networks is now getting into original comedy with the pilot "Whitey". Producer Leslie Greif, who ushered in the surprise hit miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys", is behind the project that is apparently being earmarked for the History Channel. It's about a conservative guy (played by David Koechner, "The Office") in his 40s who doesn't know what to do after he gets fired.

... Lifetime's "Drop Dead Diva" has a return date: Season 5 will start June 23.

SHOWRUNNER NEWS

... "Criminal Minds" showrunner Erica Messer has signed a new deal with ABC Studios, which could trigger the first domino to fall like a house of cards in the "Criminal Minds" contract negotiations. The CBS procedural remains un-renewed as the cast has not penned new deals, but Messer's autograph bodes well for this standoff to come to an end soon.

... "Cougar Town" producer Blake McCormick will take over showrunning duties next season, the comedy's fifth overall and second on TBS. McCormick replaces Ric Swartzlander, who took over for creator Bill Lawrence after Season 3.

... ABC's "Malibu Country" is looking for a new showrunner should it be picked up for a second season. Nastaran Dibai stepped in to take over showrunning duties during the first season, but is leaving over creative differences.

CASTING NEWS

... Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) will star in and produce a pilot for HBO. The untitled half-hour dramedy will center on retired and active athletes living in Miami. Johnson will play one of the athletes. Peter Berg (Battleship, Hancock) will direct.

... The "Pretty Little Liars" spin-off "Ravenswood" has found its chunk o' hunk male lead. Tyler Blackburn, who currently stars on PLL as Caleb, will depart the ABC Family hit for the spin-off and start his journey in the annual PLL Halloween episode. If Caleb had a hard time with homicidal teen cliques, it won't be much better for him in Ravenswood. The show is set in the titular Pennsylvania town, which happens to suffer a curse that five youngsters must unravel. Ravenswood will premiere the day after the "Pretty Little Liars" Halloween episode.

... "Royal Pains" is welcoming some cool guest-stars to its fifth season, foremost among them being "Community"s Danny Pudi. Abed will play a radio personality who gets help from the doc when he loses his voice before a career-making gig. Also coming to "Royal Pains" will be "Grimm"s Claire Coffee and Tony-winner Stephen Spinella.

... "Ben & Kate" star Nat Faxon has grabbed the lead in the untitled FX comedy pilot from Andrew Gurland (The Last Exorcism). Faxon will play one half of a married couple who agree to "shake things up" in order to save their marriage.

News : Renewals for Dallas, Veep and Rectify

--- HBO Re-elects "Veep" for a Third Season

HBO wants Meyer in 2014! The pay-cable network has ordered a third season of its comedy "Veep", asking for 10 episodes to air in 2014. The series is currently in its second season, where it's enjoyed a ratings boost thanks in part to riding "Game of Thrones" wake. "Veep" stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as fictional vice president Selina Meyer, a bumbling politician with aspirations to one day sit in the Oval Office. Reid Scott, Tony Hale, Matt Walsh, and Anna Chlumsky play her aids, and don't forget about Timothy Simons as the arrogant White House liaison.

--- TNT Orders a Third Season of "Dallas"

Texans are fond of the saying, "Everything's bigger in Texas," and now they have a specific example to point to. TNT has made its Texas-based drama "Dallas" bigger with a Season 3 renewal, removing it from the list of many bubble shows whose fates are still undetermined. The third season will consist of 15 episodes, just like the recently concluded second season, and air sometime in early 2014.
A "continuation" of your mother's favorite family drama from the '80s, the modern "Dallas" follows a new generation of Ewings dealing with the same old backstabbing, adultery, and crime. Stars Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe, Jordana Brewster, and Julie Gonzalo join original series vets Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, and the late Larry Hagman, who passed away halfway through Season 2.

---- Sundance Renews "Rectify" for Season 2

Sundance's first original-programming rodeo is officially a business success: The network has handed out a Season 2 renewal to its debut scripted drama "Rectify" halfway through the show's first season. The 10-episode order is a promotion of sorts, as Season 1 will only be six episodes long. Season 2 is expected to air in 2014.
"Rectif"y follows a man who gets released from Death Row almost two decades after was first incarcerated for the rape of a teenage girl after DNA evidence proves his innocence. The character study follows his reintegration into normal, free society and the suspicions of his family and friends.

Pilots We Hope Don't Get Picked up

Picking out 20 pilots we want to see get made was a breeze, but wile sorting through the list of potential new network shows, we also noticed that a lot of DO NOT WANT options were piling up.

Of course, these selections are based on loglines and casting and not a single frame of actual footage, so there is a one-thousand-percent chance that I am wrong here.

Leave comments on which show u would like to get series order for next season.
---- King John
Network: ABC
Genre: A multi-camera John Leguizamo comedy about John Leguizamo
Starring: John Leguizamo (Spawn), John Leguizamo (Ice Age), John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge), and John Leguizamo (ER). From John Leguizamo.
What it's about in one sentence: It's based on John Leguizamo's life as a guy from the Bronx who makes it big, and focuses on how he stays grounded with his family by staying true to his roots.
Why we don't want to see it: Nothing against Leguizamo, but watching shows from aging actors and comedians making multi-camera comedies about their lives doesn't sound like a fun way to spend our evenings. (See also: Jim Gaffigan's pilot at CBS.)
Potential saving graces: How about some good exterior establishing shots of New York!

---- Westside
Network: ABC
Genre: A "Romeo and Juliet... TODAY!" drama
Starring: Jennifer Beals (Flashdance!), Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek), Odette Annable (House)
What it's about in one sentence: Two rival families battle for control of California's Venice Beach, but when a forbidden romance emerges between members of the warring factions, uh-oh!
Why we don't want to see it: This has bland soap written all over it, and the fact that it isn't set in a very interesting place or era (really? Present-day Venice Beach?) doesn't bode well for the show's creativity unless Venice's bodybuilders and those guys who paint themselves gold and stand really still mix it up.
Potential saving graces: A good soap is all about its characters, so it's impossible to tell how rich Westside's roster will be from just a boring logline. If the characters are good, it doesn't matter where the action takes place. But we're really praying for bodybuilders.

---- Untitled Tad Quill project
Network: CBS
Genre: Multi-camera comedy stopover for Broadway stars
Starring: Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller), Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies)
What it's about in one sentence: A widowed father balances getting back into the dating pool and raising his 12-year-old son.
Why we don't want to see it: Well this doesn't sound too good, does it?
Potential saving graces: Broderick and Chenoweth, both Tony-award winners, could spontaneously burst into song at any moment and fill our hearts with joy. But they'll more likely fill our mouths with vomit.

---- I Suck at Girls
Network: Fox
Genre: A comedy from the guy who brought you Sh*t My Dad Says
Starring: Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU), Alex Kapp Horner (The New Adventures of Old Christine)
What it's about in one sentence: Why don't you try to make sense of this official logline: "Based on Justin Halpern's book I Suck at Girls, it's a story about a boy becoming a man, and a man becoming a father, in a time before coming of age was something you could Google."
Why we don't want to see it: Halpern is the same man who gave us the Twitter feed "Sh*t My Dad Says," which was turned into the CBS series that made us all think "Sh*t CBS makes." Do we give the guy a second chance?
Potential saving graces: Ummm... hey look over there! *runs away*

---- Delirium
Network: Fox
Genre: "Love stinks" sci-fi drama
Starring: Emma Roberts (Julia Roberts' niece, and more importantly, Eric Roberts' daughter), Darren Kragasoff (The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Billie Campbell (The Killing)
What it's about in one sentence: In the future, love is outlawed and a medical procedure can remove a person's ability to go goo-goo-eyed over someone, but one girl falls head over heels just months before she's due to be de-loved!
Why we don't want to see it: Like, gag me with a spoon, right? This is going to be The Ending to the Fifth Element: The Series, isn't it? As a huge supporter of love, I'll need a BIG reason to believe in a society that outlaws the emotion, and if that reason doesn't suffice, it will be a fatal flaw.
Potential saving grace: Maybe the de-loving procedure will be particularly gruesome?

---- Bad Teacher
Network: CBS
Genre: Single-camera second-chance for a bad movie
Starring: Ari Graynor (Fringe), Ryan Hansen (2 Broke Girls, Party Down, Veronica Mars), David Alan Grier (In Living Color), Sara Gilbert (Roseanne), Kristen Davis (Sex and the City)
What it's about in one sentence: Based on the 2011 Cameron Diaz film of the same name, a potty-mouthed divorcee gets a job as a teacher in order to find her next husband and what? That doesn't even make sense. Is she trying to marry school kids? If so, then okay. Great plan.
Why we don't want to see it: Who's the genius who thinks a bad movie will make a good television show?
Potential saving graces: We actually like the cast, particularly Hansen and Davis. And we're curious to see what Grier is up to these days.

---- Welcome to the Family
Network: NBC
Genre: Culture clashin' single-camera comedy
Starring: Mike O'Malley (Glee), Mary McCormack (In Plain Sight), Ricardo Chavira (Desperate Housewives), NOT Rob Schneider
What it's about in one sentence: A Caucasian family and a Latino family are bonded after kids from each clan fall in love and get preggers.
Why we don't want to see it: Oh this again?
Potential saving graces: It's Modern Family with just the Jay and Gloria part, and I guess I'm being generous by saying that.

---- Untitled Greg Daniels/Robert Padnick comedy
Network: NBC
Genre: Single-camera comedy about being single
Starring: Mike Castle, Adhir Kalyan (Aliens in America), Eric Andre (Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23).
What it's about in one sentence: One of those "group of single friends trying to survive the labyrinth of mind games and human suffering that is dating in your early 20s" comedies, and yes, that's from the actual logline.
Why we don't want to see it: Aside from Happy Endings and maybe How I Met Your Mother, can you think of another Friends-ish comedy that's worked? This is a tough gig.
Potential saving graces: Eric F[censored]ing Andre! Also, The Office's Greg Daniels is behind it, so maybe it's one of those rare 20-something dating friends shows that works.

---- Reign
Network: The CW
Genre: Period piece young adult romance
Starring: Adelaide Kane (Power Rangers RPM), Toby Regbo, Torrance Coombs
What it's about in one sentence: Historical fiction about 15-year-old Mary Queen of Scots as she's betrothed to a prince and keeps her BFFs in her court.
Why we don't want to see it: This is more of a business decision than a statement on quality. The CW is on the verge of being a genre network, and this just wouldn't fit in with its current offerings. Unless Mary Queen of Scots had superpowers! Think about it, CW.
Potential saving graces: Maybe this will get kids interested in history again! No? Okay. Nevermind.

---- I Am Victor
Network: NBC
Genre: John Stamos
Starring: John Stamos (Full House)
What it's about in one sentence: It's been described as House but with a divorce attorney played by John Stamos instead of a doctor.
Why we don't want to see it: John Stamos and NBC... not sure which one is more desperate. This is basically Harry's Law with a male lead who happens to be John Stamos. Also, the whole "House but..." pitch is tired.
Potential saving grace: Possible Full House reunion for the former cast members who can drag themselves out of their beds. Also, John Stamos!
